(The Fastest Mile Anywhere Around)

The Mile Run Starts at 4:30 p.m. on November 5, 2017.  The Fun doesn't stop until Thanksgiving Day is over, the Turkey Trot miles are run and the calories consumed.

When the calendar turns to November, The Tallahassee Turkey Trot is not far behind.  We believe a good thing should last at least a month. Since the opening of Cascades Park in 2014, Gulf Winds Track Club has hosted the Turkey Trot Festival in Cascades Park on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Last year we were part of the opening of the new Cascades Bridge over S. Monroe Street and we introduced the Rex Cleveland Magic! Mile.  It is all back this year and the mile course is faster than ever. November is going to be a Great Month.

The Capital Cascades Bridge has been an exciting new addition to the fantastic trail system and network of parks we have in Tallahassee, Leon County and the Big Bend area.  The Bridge connects Cascades Park to FAMU Way, with its beautiful new Capital Cascades trail extension.

A race with a bridge is a perfect way to remember Rex Cleveland, the editor of the GWTC Newsletter for 17 years, a member of the GWTC Hall of Fame and many other awards.  His skill as a writer and editor were excellent and his ability to bring people together through his writing and editing were so strong the club named one of its most prized awards - the Cleveland Caldwell Advancement of the Sport Award after Rex.  In his honor this year's race will also feature a writing contest - particpant will enter a short story or a poem. For more details contact Mae Cleveland.

This will be the fastest mile in Tallahassee; one Gary Droze will truly be proud of. Starting from one of the highest points in Tallahassee (near intersection of Golf Terrace Dr. and Fairway Dr) and runners and walkers of all ages are invited to take the Rex Cleveland Magic Mile plunge downhill through Myers Park toward Cascades Park and then across the Capital Cascades Crossing and onto the brand new trail at FAMU Way, finishing just before Railroad Square.

This year's race will feature medals for all finishers and a shirt option when you register.  The shirt will be among the most unique designs you will ever see, a keeper.  You must have a race number and finish the race to receive your medal. Also, after the race we will be celebrating in Railroad Square with a post race social and special events for kids on the Cascades Trail Playground.  The winners of the writing contest will be anounced then as well.

You can register any time at Eventbrite. There will be registration and number pickup at Capital City Runners, 1817 Thomasville Rd., on Saturday, November 4, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., and race day registration starting at 3:30 p.m., at Myers Park in the community room.  Get the latest about the Magic Mile and other  Tallahassee running information from the GWTC Web News.

After the running is done, GWTC invites everyone to a fun social event at Railroad Square.  A little beer (for those over 21), a little food (for all) and a lot of fun.

Registration fee:   Age 15 and over: $12 (no shirt); $15 (with shirt) through October 31. After October 31 fees are $15 (no shirt) and $20 (with shirt).  Age 14 and younger:  $3 with a donation of food.
