A new GWTC Youth Striders Team – The Oak Ridge Elementary School Eagles Soar

David Yon, April 11, 2018

The newest addition to the GWTC Youth Striders, the Oak Ridge Elementary School Eagles, soared on their first day of practice, April 10, 2018.  Nearly 30 elementary students (maybe more) participated in the first day of practice.  For now, the team is meeting on Tuesdays at 5:00 at Oak Ridge.

Tony Gennie, the Physical Education Director for the school is the leader of this group.  This day has been almost a year in the making as she patiently worked to secure all the approvals needed to make it happen.  Ms. Gennie reached out to Gulf Winds Track Club, which quickly got on board.  Most of the kinds are also part of the Boys and Girls Club and First Century After School Program.  A special thanks to Kacey Dennis, Area Director for the Boys and Girls Club, for making this happen.  And a big thanks to Eli Rosario for her magic touch helping bring all the groups together.  Eli’s Account

The team also expects to seek a school grant program from GWTC.  These grants, overseen by Mark Priddy are designed to help teachers and parent volunteers develop a youth running program at every local school. The emphasis of the program is on running or fast walking and helping the child develop a healthy lifestyle.  You can read more about the grants at GWTC School Grant Program.
