It has been two knee surgeries and a state championship or two since Maclay Coach Gary Droze captured a GWTC grand prix event. Well, there is a rumor, unconfirmed by scientific evidence until today, that apple pie is the key to overcoming meniscus damage to your knees. So why wouldn’t the Hoze choose the Flash to make his return and test the theory? After all where else can you get such wonderful pies for running fast? It was a magic formula as he ran the seventh fastest Flash time ever, 40:35, and the fastest masters time EVER in the race to win the 14th running of this event. GWTC’s new President, Jane Johnson, appears to like Pie as well, as she won the women’s race with a masters record time of 47:17, smashing the previous best of 51:13 by Kathy Weiss. It was Jane’s fourth Flash title and Gary’s third.
The official masters title for the day went to Reid Vannoy who ran 45:00 and Julie Clark who ran 54:16 in the 50-degree temperatures. One hundred forty-seven runners braved the traffic to finish this quality race directed by Joe and Nadine Dexter. It was the second grand prix race of the year. Pies went to all of the age group winners and gloves to the runners up.
