March Newsletter – The Prez Says…

Was the Tallahassee marathon a perfect day? I have been present at most of the 39 Tallahassee marathons. I can’t remember a better race day. Between the singing of the national anthem by Sarah Dugas and seeing the top 3 overall finishers only 26 seconds apart, it doesn’t get much better than that! Thank you Jay and Nancy and all the fantastic volunteers!
As we move into March, the race calendar begins to offer more 5ks, but also the beginning of triathlon season. The Gulf Winds Triathletes will be hosting the Red Hills Triathlon at the end of the month. Kathy McDaris and her volunteers have developed this into one of the areas premiere early season triathlons.
One of the things that make this a great club is seeing new and energized volunteers step in for retiring ones. An excited Mike Burns is going to take over for Herb Wills as director of the Palace Saloon 5k. Herb helped the race grow with his creative marketing. I am sure Mike will improve on the race in his own way.
Elizabeth Stupi has retired as our co social chairman. Her creativity in planning socials will be missed. Robin Hill has stepped up to serve with Kathy Lindsay as co social chairman. Please check the webpage for the upcoming events they have planned.
Our club is getting younger. 45% of our year end membership is now younger than 35 years old. I realized this when I discovered we have 263 subscribed addresses on the GWIND list, and we have 1226 GWIND Face Book users. For those of us not in this 45%, don’t forget that the Senior Games are being held in Tallahassee March 9-18th.
As the club continues to grow, so does the work. If you have something that you would like to help with please feel free to contact me or any board member. The GWTC website contains a link to volunteer for each of our GWTC races. It also lists each of the members of the various GWTC committees if you have a suggestion. Please fee free to use it.
Keep in mind club memberships are on a calendar year basis. If your membership expired in December and have not renewed please do so. (No Grand Prix points unless your membership is current.)
