November Means There is a Lot to Do

Felton Wright,

In Tallahassee I experience only 3 running seasons. The “what not to wear summer season,” calls for going shirtless in order to survive our heat and humidity. The approaching spring and fall “shirt” season where I pull out whatever shirt is on top of the pile of clean laundry. During the short winter season I can “accessorize” my random shirt and short options with hats, gloves and tights. However my running buddies have been known to roll their eyes at my selection. At last a change in season is here!

As more clothes are needed, the longer distance races begin to appear on the race calendar. The Boston Mini marathon, Turkey Trot 15k, Ten mile challenge and the Tallahassee Ultra are on our fall calendar. These races and others are great ways to enjoy our fall weather.
I want to give a special thanks to Chika Okoro, Holley Parker and all the coaches that are working with the beginning running class. 70 plus people were at the first class. It is great to see the excitement on the faces of new runners as they take up the sport. Welcome!

It is also important to recognize the new club race directors we have for this fall. Chuck and Janna Davis have taken over the directorship of the Pine Run and produced perfect weather but didn’t seem to do much about the hills. Herb Wills has taken solo charge of the Tannenbaum 6k. Please be sure and thank them for taking on these responsibilities.

This year we are trying something new, electronic voting. All current GWTC members should have received a mailer with instructions on how to vote for 2014 GWTC officers and board members. Please record your votes.

November 8th is a special movie night with the showing of the documentary “Age of Champions.” This movie that tracks the lives of some of the participants of the Senior Games is awe inspiring. The director of the film will be in attendance. If you have ever thought you were too old to compete, come enjoy this film. You will find new inspiration. Check the website for location and details.

We are required to have an annual meeting if we change our Constitution and Bylaws. The board would like to combine and simplify these documents. (See the proposed changes on the website). Tuesday November 19th is our annual meeting at MoMo’s Pizza in Market Square. As the club has grown and technology has improved, some of our by-laws have become obsolete. Please come and vote between 7 and 8:30 p.m. and as an incentive, please stay and enjoy pizza and beverages. This will be an opportunity to ask your board any questions you may have. We hope to see you there.

Then on Sunday November 24th the annual Turkey Trot Music Fest will move this year to the 5th Avenue Tap Room at Midtown Manor. Come register early and hear some great music.

Finally on December 14th we will have our annual GWTC Holiday Party at Shiloh Farms. Put on your best running/dancing shoes and enjoy the festivities. This is your opportunity to see Gary and Peg Griffin provide instruction on the proper way to line dance the night after an Ultra. There is also a rumor that Santa will be running by to see the younger GWTC members this year. It will be a great way to start the holidays.
I hope to see you at all the events your club has planned!

Run fast, run safe.
