To Infinity and Beyond – Recycle Away
Judy Alexander,
It’s track season! Even if you think you aren’t really interested in the sport of track and field in general, I urge you to go to a local meet and watch the talented youth runners, jumpers, and throwers Tallahassee boasts. You will be proud and inspired! By now, the first couple of meets of the season, Rickards Relays and Maclay Small Schools Meet, have already been contested but there are many more to enjoy. You can get your feet wet at a few of the more casual meets on Tuesday nights at various high schools. The first major high school events are on March 5 (middle schools) and March 6 (high schools) at Godby’s Jesse Forbes Invitational Meet. Chiles High will host its Track and Field Championships Meet on March 6. For some collegiate action, check out the FAMU Relays on March 12 and 13, and the FSU Relays on March 25 and 26.
I am particularly excited about the fact that Gulf Winds Track Club is the official sponsor of the 2010 City Championship Meet on April 6 at FSU’s Mike Long Track. This meet, directed by the same great guys who bring you the GWTC Summer Track Series, Tom Perkins and longtime, successful Lincoln High Coach Perry Shaw, showcases the best track and field talent Tallahassee and the surrounding areas have to offer. This year, you can “buy” or sponsor an event for a fee and hear whatever title you prefer blasted through the public address system by none other than the official voice of FSU Track and Field, Herb Wills! How does “And now, get ready for the 2010 1 Fresh Stir Fry 400 meter run!” sound? Get in on the action! Sponsoring an event will help defray meet costs and support our GWTC Chenoweth Endowment Fund. It’s a win-win-win situation!
March’s club race coming up on the 27th is the 35th annual Springtime 10K, with its accompanying 5K and 1-Miler. At least 110 participants are preparing for the race with The Springtime Training Group, led by Robin Borschel and T.J. Cutchins, who are assisted by another half dozen dedicated GWTC member “coaches.” This year, we’ve added a time bonus for both men and women. Why not get a team together?
Fred and Margarete Deckert continue to have success collecting running shoes for reuse and now Mary Jean Yon has launched a general recycling program for club races. All YOU have to do to help make this timely effort successful is look for specially marked bins at the races and use them! Thanks!
Happy Running and Recycling!
