CCCC train hard

The recent heat and humidity in Tallahassee have discouraged many of us from engaging in rigorous physical activity outside during the day. At this time of year, even the most dedicated runners usually opt for the cooler early morning or late evening hours.

But, despite the temperature, one group of athletes can be seen, without fail, working out four afternoons a week at the FSU Mike Long Track. The members of the Capital City Christian Cruisers track team follow a diligent and difficult practice schedule for sprinting, distance running, and field events. And, their efforts are really paying off.

The team consists of students from a variety of local schools who vary in age from 6 to 18. Any young runner interested in track and field is welcome to join the team. And, any child can find a place in the broad choice of running and field events open to participants.

Joining the team means that a child will be coached by some of the best. Alice Sims, a former seven-time All-American in track at FSU leads the group, while former Olympic gold medallist Derrick Walker assists. All of the coaches are fine examples of physical fitness themselves. In fact, at the well-attended CCCC Track Classic meet held at FSU on July 14, the CCCC coaches’ team beat out thirteen other coaches’ teams in the 4 x 100-meter relay! More importantly, these coaches volunteer their time to guide the youth of our community toward positive values and healthy attitudes. The goals of the program are very clear: to encourage the spiritual growth of the children and their families, and to develop both physical fitness and character within a wholesome and safe environment. The coaches and parents work together to emphasize hard work, prayer, and TEAM (“together everyone achieves more”).

The CCCC team participates in local and statewide track meets throughout the summer. This year, 65 team members qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) State Championship. Despite the tough competition at the state qualifying meet in June, an amazing 25 in this group performed well enough to qualify for the National AAU Junior Olympic Games.

This week, they will travel to Norfolk State University in Virginia to compete against other outstanding athletes from across the nation. The Gulf Winds Track Club is a proud sponsor of this local youth running organization. We wish the CCCC team members the best of luck as they travel to Virginia for the national competition.
