Athlete of the Week nominations: April 9
By Gary Droze - Maclay CoachGIRLS: Lakendra Cunningham (9th Grade, Wakulla) By far the most impressive area female frosh at the Capital City Classic, she ran honor roll times in 3 events, winning the 400 (59.19), placing 2nd in the 200 (25.52), and taking 3rd in the 100 (12.61).
BOYS: Mike Williams (?, Godby) Helped ensure Godby’s team win in the Capital City Classic with clutch wins in the Long Jump (22-6) and Triple Jump (45-7), hitting area bests in both events. Matt Katz (12, Maclay) Although he was qualified for the seeded evening races in the 1600 & 3200, he chose to run the earlier consolation heats, so he could remain faithful to his religious observance of Passover. Running solo ahead of the consolation field, he hit 4:29 and 10:10, which earned him 2nd & 3rd place points after his times were compared to the finishes in the evening races.
OTHER NOTES: Just one more regular season meet left…
Thursday, Apr 12, 5pm-10pm, City Champs @ FSU. Probably the most competitive area meet of the year, often producing the season’s best marks. Rickards girls and Godby boys will attempt to repeat their winning ways from last week’s Capital City Classic. The winner of the boys’ 100 meters will have bragging rights as the fastest runner in town, while the most ferocious girls’ battle might be the first race of the day: the 4x800m contest between area leader Florida High, fast-rising Rickards (3rd last week), and Chiles will almost certainly come down to the last lap. Look for Chiles’ anchor Zita Magloire’s 2:17 credentials to make it interesting!
