In what could mark the end of an era, Tim Unger powered away for Tim Bolton to grab the title of champion of the 2004 Flash 12K, winning in a time of 42:46 versus 43:00. Lisa Whitworth returned to the winner’s circle with a time of 52:49. Liz Baker was second in 55:09. Top masters finishers were Larry Mengelkoch (45:12) and Yvonne Gsteiger (56:21).
A clear cool morning provided the runners with near perfect conditions. However, the Chairs area has seen enormous growth over the years and the roads have become quite congested with traffic. And while the Dexter’s had lots of traffic controllers out on the course, runners did find themselves having to get off the road to avoid the cars. Joe Dexter indicated after the race that it was likely that he would be looking for a new home for the race next year. While I hate to see race courses change, there is little doubt Joe is doing the right thing. Regardless of where this race is run, it will continue to be a delight!
