Preps Take Off - The Lincoln Invitational
September 4, 2004By David Yon
Cross Country season got off to a flying start with the first official high school meet of the year. Chiles High School served notice that losing last year’s top stars to graduation would not lead to the end of its local dominance. The boys and girls teams each won titles at this race, despite originally being scheduled to compete in Rome, Georgia. The boys team topped second place Maclay 29 points to 80, while the girls team scored 36 points to Maclay’s 61. The Tallahassee Democrat reported that over 200 runners participated.
The girls race saw a lot of excitement as Maclay sophomore Adrianna Piekarewicz took the title beating second place Kelly Savery of Chiles by four seconds, 20:17 to 20:21. On the boy’s side, Chiles runner John Blocker took the title with a time of 16:37. Maclay’s leading runner, Brennan Clayton took second place in 16:53.
The Lincoln Invitational, hosted by Lincoln and coach Perry Shaw is the traditional kickoff to the local cross country season. The course is tough and with a late morning start it is usually hot. Watch for times to drop as the season moves on.
